Care Home Data Platform Innovation Foundation Challenge
A systems analysis jointly funded by Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES) and the Chief Scientist’s office was undertaken, prior to the Covid 19 pandemic, by academics from Edinburgh Napier University and University of Edinburgh, to understand from Care Home managers and staff what opportunities existed for innovative solutions to improve the lives of both the residents and the staff.
Care Homes collect a significant amount of data about their residents for making individual, person-centred care decisions and for management/national reporting requirements.
This new Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition invites companies to assess if currently collected data on residents by care homes, can provide a holistic digital picture of a resident’s health, wellbeing and care needs.
This first Care Home Innovation Challenge will lay the foundations for subsequent innovation in this area. The results will enable the future development of scalable and replicable risk stratification and decision support tools that will empower care home staff in collaboration with relevant others to make informed, timely and appropriate interventions for person-centred care.

Two East Region SBRI Competitions opening on the 4th January 2021 and 1st February 2021 are being launched via Innovate UK.
Improving Multi-morbidity Acute Care Using Data Analytics
The Multi-morbidity challenge is in response to the need to improve the care for the increasing numbers of patients with multi-morbidities who are presenting at emergency departments.
The innovation opportunity being the ability to better utilise existing data to then support improved clinical decision making for each patient during their time in the hospital setting.
The aim is to improve clinical decision-making by introducing a data-driven approach that must:
- identify multimorbidity patients
- provide individual risk stratification through real-time data visualisation
- provide decision support following an emergency admission
Organisations can apply for a share of £160,000 inclusive of VAT to develop a data-driven solution to improve the care and outcomes for patients with multimorbidity admitted to A&E.
Successful applicants will receive funding, as well as guidance from NHS Lothian, The Data Lab, University of Edinburgh and access to the DataLoch repository of health data for South East Scotland.

Improving Hip Fracture Outcomes Using Data
The Hip Fracture challenge has been developed in response to an innovation opportunity being identified as part of the NHS Lothian Orthopaedic Quality Improvement Programme at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh (RIE).
This innovation opportunity arises from the need to understand how to better analyse and present hip fracture patients’ data in order to then support clinical decision making that can improve the quality of care and patient outcomes.
The aim of the competition is to improve outcomes for hip fracture patients by developing a system using routinely collected health data and data-analytics techniques.
The system must optimise complex patient care pathways to deliver hip fracture care according to national care standards.
Organisations can apply for a share of £160,000 inclusive of VAT to develop a solution which will improve quality of care and outcomes for hip fracture patients.
